A castle, a prison and a place of execution
The Tower was the first palace for the Norman kings who invaded England in 1066. It later became a prison for traitors and criminals who were executed on the nearby Tower Hill. The Crown Jewels are now kept in vaults and you can be shown round by the guards who are called Beefeaters.
